New Virus, *very* nasty |
It's time for everyone to update their virus checkers again!
We are once again getting email infected with a nasty virus from zMUD users. This virus is called BadTrans and is very bad. Basically, it infects any system running Outlook where scripts are run automatically (stupid Microsoft enables this action by default). It installed a keyboard logger that captures your keystrokes (passwords, credit cards, etc) and sends the log file to a remote email address.
We try to respond to each person that sends us a virus infected file to let them know they are infected, but everyone should update their virus definition files, and if using Outlook, go into the security settings and turn off all of the silly automatic script execution options. There's really *NO* reason to ever automatically execute a script within an email message.
And yet again, our support time has increased because we are having to deal with all of these infected emails. Sigh. What is this world coming to?

A good market for anti-virus software.
I just tried this setting in Outlook 2002 and this probably applies to previous versions as well. Changing the security setting for Scripting to disable or prompt affects Internet Explorer too.
So suddenly I got prompted about whether I wanted to enable scrpts to run on every web page I visited. Highly annoying.
I recommend a good virus scanner that checks email. Norton 2002 has been really good so far.

People keep trying to infect my pine with Outlook virii, so I save them. I'll be glad to forward them along if you're REALLY hungry for virus-meat.
