trying to color text

cannot for the life of me color text, both using the package editor and typing directly into the command line.
I am able to trigger a word and send a command succesfully but no highlighting of text. I am seeing color though with
my command echo which shows up as yellow. I've only been using Cmud recently and I've never got text to
color at all. any help to would be welcome, especially the simplest of things because i'm at a complete loss.
