Playing Dragonrealms, Transitioning to CMUD |
I have been using zMUD and CMUD for several years, though I've been away from them for a while and have forgotten most everything. I've recently re-joined Dragonrealms and was would like to start using CMUD for the game, but I am finding some confusing information. It sounds like the various codes from Simutronics games were understood by CMUD, but that things may have changed in the recent years and CMUD had not followed. Is this true, and how much of a problem will it be for me to set up CMUD to run DR smoothly? I've been trying to read recent postings but I probably missed a few, so I am sorry if I'm basically rehashing what has been asked before. Thanks for your time.

CMud is not on the list of important entities Simutronics notifies when protocol definitions change. That said, nobody's come running over hear in a panic because they can no longer use their favorite third-party client to login with or because a bunch of their scripts stopped working.
So, either you misinterpreted the info, someone was mistaken when telling you about it, or Simutronics actually did make radical changes and most/all CMud users in that community simply abandoned us in favor of the custom client instead of going to bat for us to get the information needed to update CMud. |

Ok, I guess I'm going to go with a combination of mostly two and a slight bit of one. When looking for how to start using CMUD with DR again the information out there was pretty thin, so I was accepting pretty much everything at face value. In a discussion on the Simu boards regarding the odd spacing in the items being held, someone posted:

Zugg created those DR gsl codes a LONG time ago. Things are completely different now.
You basically can't use any gsl for CMUD that isn't already working 100%.
The best you could do would is to go raw output, and emulate XML. :)
Good luck!

I think I know how I'm going to spend my next week, though, remembering how to code for CMUD, and looking to make sure the settings are basically right. In the page that talks about settings for Simutronics games and how to get them going (yes, I did read through that), it sounds like it suggests eScape under GSL client for the maximum amount of information. Unfortunately, in my settings I see zmud, wizard, browser_fe and stormfront. Preferences there?
Finally, thanks for the reply. :-) |

eScape java client = browser_fe. Does not send you the GSB tag (the tag that contains the character name) but does send you the GSw00008 tag (weather/moons/time).
Simutronics Wizard client = Wizard. Sends the GSB tag, but not the GSw00008 tag. Beyond this, both wizard and browser_fe are identical.
ZMud used to equate to something unique to us, but Simutronics long ago merged this with Wizard mode so there's absolutely no difference between identifying yourself as ZMud/CMud or Wizard (honestly speaking, though, I never saw any difference when the claim was that ZMud was getting something different).
Stormfront = XML stream with very sparse GSL tagging. MXP and XML are part of the same language standard, so right out of the box CMud can fully yet completely unofficially support Stormfront mode--the only caveat is that because Simutronics stuck with general XML instead of going with the MUD-specific MXP, the user has to do ALL the work in getting the XML tags set up. This is NOT a trivial or Basic-level task.
IMPORTANT CAVEAT: things could very well have drastically changed by now, but the above was exactly how things worked when I was paying Simutronics (had to leave due to unemployment in 2008/2009) |

I am only trying to make sure that I am reading and understanding what I think it means, not trying to translate what you're saying to something else or put other words in your mouth, but it seem the recommended mode would be browser_fe, since I already know my character's name, but the time/weather can be useful. If I feel adventurous, try Stormfront and start tracking the XML tags, and can get a more accurate set or perhaps additional information from Simutronics?
