MXP

I am uncertain if this is the correct place in the forum for this. I couldn't find an MXP related section.

When MXP tags are used, text is underlined to show it is a link. Is there a way to disable this automatic underlining of text?

Quote:
A Room in Mud School [Room 3757]
You are in a room in Mud School. Paintings of the heroic graduates of mud
school adorn the walls. To the west is Furey's Training Room, and to the east
is Zump's Guild Room. North of you is the next Station of Mud School.
There is a sign on the wall (type 'LOOK SIGN' to read it).

[Exits: north east south west]

I would prefer to instead show

While keeping the same functionality.

It's possible, but I don't think it's included in the Preferences window anymore. Use #call %pref(MXPUnderline,0) to turn it off.

Thank you but I should have clarified, I am speaking from the MUD admin side, not the player.

Then there's no way to do it. Preferences are accessible only via the client, and really admins should avoid dictating client preferences to their clients.

Thank you.

However while I agree, admins shouldn't try to dictate client preferences, there is a certain level where it is appropriate or even necessary. Color is an obvious one, while it is indeed customizable - every MUD sets defaults which they feel are most appropriate.

In this particular case I wanted to use MXP to make the MUD very interactive and provide it for many things. Though if that means the majority of output to the client will be underlined and look horrible - I will avoid it. It would, to me, be simply too large of a design flaw.

I think there is a distinct difference in the two cases you present Tnaris. However it may be something that Zugg can modified that allows you to set default behavior that the player can then override if they wish.

I got the PM.

First, you should be able to join the MXP Developers Forum yourself by going to the Site/Groups link at the top.

Regarding the response I sent to the PM, it's related to the statement MattLofton made above:
Quote:
admins should avoid dictating client preferences to their clients.

CMUD (and zMUD) have always taken the "clients" side over the "muds" side. The reason command links are underlined by default is to prevent a MUD from hiding a command link, or having the player accidentally click on something they didn't know was a link.

The underlined link makes it obvious to the player that they can click on it to do something. Without the underline, the player would have no way to learn what they can click on and what they can't.

Don't treat MUD players like "WoW players". MUD players are much more savvy about what they are playing. If they have already taken the time and effort to download a real MUD client like CMUD, then they can be trusted to change their URL Style preferences as they wish to play your MUD.

I really don't think having a bunch of underlined links is going to turn people off. In fact, it could easily have the reverse effect...players would log in, see all of the underlines, and think "Cool, this MUD really uses MXP!!". And that might actually attract more players.

Bottom line is to focus on the gameplay and functionality of your MUD. Don't worry about the visual presentation. If your players really cared about the visual presentation, they'd probably be playing a graphical MMO instead of the MUD.

I didn't realize joining the MXP forum was so easy. Done. Very Happy

While I disagree about ignoring presentation (I myself have always been picky about playing MUDs where I disliked the interface - to the point where it has often been a deal breaker) I never thought about it from a client security perspective. I agree, attempting to copy the screen for pasting only to accidentally click on an MXP link would be irritating to say the least.

I'll have to re-think my design and/or have an easy-to-access download for pre-configured client settings. Which would probably be a good idea regardless.
