Vista telnet link on website

Hi,

As telnet is not turned on by default in Vista it is harder to get players to log on your mud via a website.
Is there not a way to bypass this? Via a javascript? I have no idea but I am sure other mudhosters encountered the same problem?

I hope somebody knows the answer.

Cheers,
Andre

I'm not sure of your question here but a couple of things. First Zuggsoft.com does not operate a MUD. It is the maker of zMUD, CMUD (the best mud clients available IMO) and TeSSH, a powerful scripting tool which is like PuTTY on steroids.

As for the Vista problem, since it's an OS/Firewall problem then it probably can't be (and definitely should not) be disabled via JavaScript as this would pose a SEVERE security threat. If you are having trouble with you local machine you can ask your local admin to change the permissions.

Actually, the issue with Vista is that most of the time it does not install a telnet client by default (this is a change from previous version of the operating system). I'd suggest either including links to an online telnet client (I think mudconnector still has theirs) or include instructions on how to obtain one (either by letting them install the one from windows or obtaining another one).

Well, You could put a link to Zuggsoft on your web page... Seeing as how it IS the best way to play a MUD.

I think you are referring to things like Achaea having a client built in to their website. I would think that would be a tad more difficult to do than you would want to bother with.

Mudconnect.com Has a web interface telnet client here. http://www.mudconnect.com/java/Telnet/
They have links to instructions on how to install it for your web page. Edit:(Apparently their instructions page is a dead link.)

A few links to some components for putting different ones on your own site.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jtelnet/

Here is a link that shows you how to enable the telnet client in VISTA http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2050/vista_install_enable_telnet_client_server/
I do not know of any way to have it enabled via Javascript and I would be a little worried if I COULD find a way to do it.

PuTTY is a free telnet client that is relatively easy to install. Here is the home page link. http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

As I do not run VISTA on any of my machines at home, that and the fact that I own copies of Zmud Cmud and Cmud Pro I haven't done much research on other clients.
