"CMUD has stopped working" It won't even load |
I just bought zMUD/CMUD to try and take advantage of Vista. Unfortunately, whenever I click on CMUD.exe or zMUD.exe (even tried run as admin) I immediately get "*MUD has stopped working and will now close." [crash to desktop]. I have tried installing into C drive and into K drive (game drive), but nothing works, and I am not computer guru so I am at a complete loss. Can anyone help?

You also need to install them as administrator for them to work. zMUD on Vista is not officially supported, however CMUD should be fine.

If you aren't a computer expert, don't even bother trying to make zMUD work in Vista.
With CMUD, make sure you accept the default locations for the program and data files in the installer (again, unless you really know what you are doing). If you still can't run CMUD, then try right-clicking on the CMUD icon and select the "Run as Admin" option.
If this still doesn't work, then you'll need to post more details about the exact error message you are getting and what version of Vista you are using (and whether it was an upgrade, or whether it came preinstalled on a new computer, etc). But I am not aware of any general problem with CMUD and Vista at this time...it's working fine for most people, but Vista can have some weird problems sometimes and I still don't recommend it for most people until Microsoft releases SP1. |

On a similar note, will us Vista users ever be able to double click on the CMUD icon normally, or will we always have to "Run as Admin"?

Okay, still doesn't work.... I have a preinstalled Vista Home Premium 32-bit on a HP. There is no error message other than "CMUD has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution." "CMUD has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." It does this immediately on double click or after clicking Allow (as Admin).
Edited Vista version unfortunately I have no other OS option. |

tried to do a clean install and it stops at Execute: "C:\Program Files\CMUD\CMUD.Exe" /REGSERVER
This is incredibly frustrating, as I purchased ZMUD/CMUD because I have Vista and MM2K didn't appear to be actively working on their product. But MM2K is what I am using and it works fine. Please help me, because I would like to use your product. |

CMUD is actually installed by that point - the part that it's stopping at is just registration of the COM server. It's weird that so many people are having the installer stop at that step.
Anyway. CMUD is actually fully installed by that point in the installer and should run fine - it'll try to reregister the COM server when you start it. |

Zugg is there a command to manually register to COM server? It's a kludge but maybe doing it independently will help a lot of these folks out.

There must be some permissions set wrong on your Vista system. Running CMUD.EXE is the way to manually register the COM server. The fact that even the /REGSERVER line is crashing means that his system isn't letting him set any registry keys. CMUD first tries to set system-level keys, but if that fails, CMUD then sets user-level keys instead. So his system isn't even letting him set user-level keys, even with Run as Admin.
I'm afraid I'm clueless on this one. I've seen some other problems with some preinstalled Vista systems (HP seems to be the worst, btw). I don't know what OEM stuff HP has installed, and how they have tweaked the settings, but it works fine with a normally purchased copy of Vista.
I wish I could figure out what's causing it, but there are so many bugs in Vista, it's hard to tell if it is something I can change, or if it's just a Vista bug or something HP has done to the system.
Fuego Ledrey: Most Vista users do *not* need to select "Run as Admin". That is just a work around for systems that have the Vista UAC screwed up. For example, I can just double-click on my CMUD icon on my Vista Business system just fine with no trouble at all. It's not clear why some systems have trouble and some don't.
The reason I added the /REGSERVER line to the installer is that Vista is supposed to always run any program with the text "install" in the filename as Admin. Maybe there is something that is preventing this from happening on your system. Did you try right-clicking on the CMUD134INSTALL.EXE file that you downloaded and selecting Run As Admin to ensure that the installer is run in Admin mode.

It does this immediately on double click or after clicking Allow (as Admin). |
You still are not doing this right. Do not just double-click and then click Allow. You need to right-click and select the "Run as Admin" option, then click Allow. That's the only way to force something to run as Admin.
For other possible tricks, try right-clicking on the CMUD.EXE file and set the WinXP Compatibility option in the Properties. Again, this shouldn't be needed on most Vista systems, but it seems to help on some with trouble. |

I have done it by right clicking and clicking run as Admin as well. I have changed security to run as admin. I have tried it without admin assignment This is the first time i have had a problem with vista running a program, and I have installed a few. It is drivin me nuts.

Just tried this had the same result. Clicked Rt clicked for Run as Admin and ran regular. Both crash immediately. |

I'm guessing there must be some entry that still around so I suggest this. Uninstall CMUD. Delete the associated directories under Program Files and My Games. Search the registry for all references to CMUD and delete them. For good measure download a fresh copy of CMUD.
Make sure you install it while logged in with Administrator privileges. When installing discconect from the internet (for security purposes) then disable all your firewall and anti-virus programs. I know it's a little extreme, but it gets you the purest install possible. Beyond that, I'm not sure what to suggest. |

Tried your suggestion, and ended with the same result, crash to desktop. It must have something to do with the registry (I am guessing)

Try This
You could try this:
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then
right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as Administrator.
Type
Regsvr32 C:\Program Files\Cmud\Cmud.exe
And let us know what happens from there (success/failure) Be sure to include any messages you get.
Also check the application event log (don't ask me how to get to in Vista) and report anything posted around the time of install |

When you run regsvr32, put double quotes around the parameter (path to CMUD.exe) to make sure the space gets picked up properly.
In the Control Panel, go to System and Maintenance and all the way at the bottom (under Administrative Tools) you'll see View event logs. |

Sorry, I should have chimed in on this thread before it got so far:
Regsvr32 only works with DLL files. It's never going to work for EXE files. The
"C:\Program Files\CMUD\CMUD.Exe" /REGSERVER
command is the only way to tell it the EXE to register it's COM servers. But that's what was failing for him in the first place. Which, of course, doesn't make any sense at all since when using Run as Admin, there shouldn't be any restrictions on writing to the system registry.
The event log is rather odd, since it shows an error from zMUD 7.21 and not from CMUD. Looks like he might not have scrolled to the end of his event log or something (the timestamp on his error log was 6/29/2007 9:45:34 PM ) |

You error message suggests that you have zMUD installed as well. Do you?
If so back up your data and try uninstalling zMUD completely including deleting the directories. I would also remove all references to zMUD from the registry as well. If you do have zMUD installed, it's possible it presence is affecting CMUD is trying to do when it is registering since zMUD isn't supported on Vista.
Also do you have zMapper installed? If you may want to (temporarily) uninstall that as well. |

thought I had completely deleted it... searched for zmud, and found nothing, ran a registry cleaner, it came back with no missing files for zMud, so I am assuming it is gone. It was installed, and I will uninstall and reinstall CMUD. No zMapper.

Well, it's the same as we have been saying throughout this entire thread. For some reason your Windows system is not letting CMUD create it's registry entries. Somehow your system permissions are messed up. As I've said before, it's possible that it's something HP did in their OEM version of Vista. I've never seen any case where using the Run as Admin option wouldn't fix this. All I can suggest is doing a clean install of Vista and see if that helps. I can certainly refund your CMUD purchase if you send an email to sales@zuggsoft.com with your license info. But you are the only one that has had this particular error. Everyone else that gets an error with the "C:\Program Files\CMUD\CMUD.exe" /REGSERVER line works fine when they use Run as Admin. It's definitely a Vista problem and not a CMUD problem, but I just don't know enough about low-level Vista permissions to help much with this. As I've said, I've never seen any case where using "Run as Admin" wouldn't work.
