It sounds like your default layout file may be corrupted.
I *think* the proscribed trick is to hold down the shift key when you open the session.
This gives that particular session a new layout file. The windows will be in odd places if it works you will need to put them where they belong and save your layout.
But if it works at least you will be able to use the session! |

The shift-key trick is only for CMud. In ZMud, you just delete/rename files.
files you can delete and ZMud will automatically recreate them:
zmud.ini -- controls aspects of system windows, also contains global settings that are not part of the recreation process (make a backup or rename the file instead if you need to keep these)
setting.dok -- controls aspects of the Settings Editor
files you can delete that ZMud will not automatically recreate:
.lay files -- with the exception of a bug-created file (named ".lay") and maybe a "zmud.lay" or "default.lay" in the main directory, these take on the form of (name of your session).lay.
.mud files -- system.mud, custom.mud, default.mud, don't delete any of these. (name of your session or child window).mud, while you might rant and scream at your computer if you delete these (they contain all your triggers and stuff), doing so won't break ZMud. |

Did you delete the .lay file? I should have worded that a bit better to indicate that Arnimas's solution was the likely culprit.

Check to make sure none of the files in the zMud directory are set to read-only, specifically the chardb. Also make sure you have proper permissions to write to files there, this is often a problem for users running Vista.
