[2.02] Import from zMUD - all files are copied not just zMUD files |
If you use the "Import from zMUD" wizard, it copies all your files over from your zMUD folder! Some of us have hundreds of MBs in there and so it takes rather a long time, not to mention almost filling my C drive!
Now I can see that some people may want this functionality, but I'd rather it just copied over my current zMUD files - not my logs, not my old zMUD 4 maps, not my map backups (only the latest one), config backups, zsc and text files. So maybe an option as to which behaviour you want would be good?
Maybe a series of tick-boxes:
1. Import Sessions
2. Copy MUD files
(2b. Copy MUD layouts - do these even work?)
3. Copy map configs
4. Copy maps (mdb files)
5. Copy databases
6. Copy zsc files
7. Copy text files
8. Copy everything else from the zMUD folder
with Select all and Clear all buttons. |

Well, that is by design. Actually, it copies all files located in the folder than contains the *.MUD file that you are importing. If you have used the zMUD defaults, then each character should be in it's own folder.
But it's important to copy everything because people will want their maps, database files, etc. There is no reason to only copy some files and not others. The whole idea of the import function is to create a working copy of your zMUD files so that you can mess with stuff without effecting zMUD. Also, when installing CMUD on Vista it will copy your files into the proper My Documents/My Games/CMUD folders since Vista can have permission problems if zMUD was installed to Program Files.
In any case, I don't plan to change this. It's easier for you to just delete what you don't want than it is to ask a bunch of questions. The Import wizard is designed for novice users, and they won't have any idea of what half of those files are for. The people who would be knowledgeable to understand those options are knowledgeable enough to delete files they don't want, or to copy the files manually in the first place. |

In that case just an option to import the session information would be useful - sometimes I forget to copy my chardb.db file over to my CMUD folder before I run it for the first time... As you say, I can copy the rest of the stuff over myself when I feel like it (it doesn't have to be before I first run CMUD, although obviously there would be issues if I didn't).
