Noob Gauges Help needed for Discworld

I am really new to zmud and really like the look of it but i am having trouble with making some gauges

I am trying to gauge my combat which has the following prompt
Hp: 500 (2268) Gp: 374 (374) Xp: 266003
current (max) current (max) current (max 1000000)
now my problem is that i cant seem to get my tiny warrior brain around how the zmud captures the vars.

I have tried to do it in parts ie first trigger pattern Hp: %d (%d)

then i put #var @hp=%1 in the value box guessing it would pick up the %1 as 500 as i can't even get this simple thing to work i gave up Evil or Very Mad banging my head off the walls, if there is anyone that can help i would be really greatful.
I play on Discworld. we dont get a prompt like other muds eg.

this is a typical day on our mud

You follow Dumpsh north.
Large statues, lining the Avenue of the Pharaohs, cast their shadows over this side of the west bazaar, having absolutely no effect on either shoppers or traders. Lettuce Lane provides a handy exit for anyone who cannot bear the stern silhouettes, leading them away to the south, but nobody seems to require such an escape route. An expensive-looking stall has been set up here, self-importantly dark and heavy against the riot of colour of the rest of the bazaar.
It is a warm Seedtime's morning with a strong breeze and a beautifully clear sky.
There are nine obvious exits: north, south, east, west, northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest and enter stall.
Dumpsh and a dusty D'reg are standing here.
An unlit torch is mounted on a pole.
so thats why i want to keep track of combat many thanks in advance if you can help.....

The #var command requires the var name without the @ and it uses a space to separate the name and the value. Read the help file on #var more closely.

#var hp %1
