Can't run zMud 7.21 |
It has been some time since I used zMud. I recently re-installed my zMud v 5.55 on my new XP machine. I just downloaded the latest version and am attempting to upgrade. I made a copy of my old zMud folder, then installed 7.21 into my existing zMud folder, as instructed.
When I ran the new zMud for the first time, it went through a lengthy process to load the mudlist. Then it crashed, and now it crashes every time I run it. It gives me a poppup error that says:
Chars: Cannot perform this operation on a closed dataset.
Then it just freezes on the splash screen and doesn't do anything else. I am still able to run the 5.55 executable from the copied folder no problem, but I would love to upgrade to the new version. How do I fix this error??

I am in the same boat. I just installed over my 5.55
and I had already read the thread you pointed to, no go.
Any new ideas pls?
I also had 6.16 downloaded...
so I deleted the 7.21 dir I tried,
copied my 5.55 back into \zmud\
and I tried to install 6.16, (also to see if I could then Upgrade 6.16 to 7.21 and get an upgrade button, which I do not see as of yet...)
and 6.16 fails to install at all, it says could not open licence.rtf
and crashes |

Ok first If you don't have any saved .mud files uninstall any versions of Zmud that you have installed using the Add/Remove programs tab. Then delete the folders that you had them installed into.
Now do an install of 7.21 there is no point in first installing 5.55.
Report back and tell us how it goes...
If you DO have saved .mud files or, .map files for that matter, you need to copy them somewhere safe so you don't lose any data then do the above and provided Zmud loads up nicely for you, you can then move your saved files back into the Zmud directory where they belong. |

I did have saved .mud files etc.
I ended up just doing a clean install of 7.21
I tried moving my .mud files in, it did not detect them,
I tried using the converter, it would not load my characters and muds (
thanks for the reply though. |

You'll need to create your characters by hand and log into them at least once so that the necessary directories and mud files get created, then close zMUD and copy over your old mud files on top of the new ones, hopefully on next login it should convert them.
