zMUD Beta forum |
Noticed it's gone, which is fair enough since it's an old product, but is it possible to have the posts available to view. In particular there were posts by Vijilante about using VBScript that I was looking to read.

Does it show up if you click on the Forums menu (that link will take you to the forums page we used to have before we got the menu)? The old posts should also be showing up via search, I believe (I seem to recall this being asked about and Zugg fixed that issue).

Nope, it's been gone for ages off the listing. You can search it though if you choose zMUD Beta Forum from the Forums menu. I did a quick search for VBScript and found the posts you're thinking of, but they came up "does not exist" when I tried to read them :(

The posts are all still there, and I can read them. I think Zugg changed the access permissions for that forum.

Maybe this should move to Website forums.
No way to make it so people can only read but not write anything? |

There were some posts in the zMUD Beta forum I wanted to read some times too. If it were just "locked"...? Or even just accessible via search? Since that is the only time I ever wanted to look in there - when a result came up for my search.

This is a limitation of the current PHPBB code. There is no way to make the articles available via Search without making the forum visible in the forum list. Even making the forum read-only will make it visible in the forum list. When I get time to mess with the forum code, I might work on this, but I have lots on my plate right now.

Why not just make it visible on the list and read-only? That lets people browse it too. You could just change the description to mention how it's read-only.

I originally made the forum hidden because too many people were looking in there and getting bad information on old beta versions. That's why it got hidden in the first place. The people who want to view certain posts in the old beta forum have very specific subjects that they are looking for, and that's fine. But letting the general Joe-average user into the old beta forum caused me to get more support emails.
Taz: I have no plans to upgrade PHPBB. The current code I've got is highly modified and integrated with the old MX-Portal system. The MX-Portal system changed to just MX and made too many changes for me to use it on this site. So now I'm stuck with the older PHPBB and the older MX-Portal and all of the modifications I have made myself to make it all work better together.
Tossing all of that out to start over with newer systems just isn't worth the time it would take. I'd spend over a month getting the site useable again, and any downtime could significantly impact our sales. That's the downside to doing my own shopping cart store and not using eLicense anymore. With eLicense, taking down the zuggsoft.com site didn't impact sales. But with the new online store, I have to keep the web site up all of the time and working well. That makes it even harder to work on any new stuff.
And, of course, since my time is already double-booked just with CMUD stuff, I don't see when I'd ever get the time for major site changes at this point. Right now the site works well for the current audience. |
