[1.17] Undocked windows always obscure the main window |
Open a session, then open another, which forms two tabbed windows on the main one. Undock one into an independent window. This window will always stack above the main window, obscuring its contents.
I have checked, and the 'stay on top' option is definitely NOT selected on the undocked window. |

That is correct. It's actually the way the window docking system works. It's left over from being used for floating toolbar windows, which you always want on top. The problem is that since floating windows don't necessarily have a task bar icon, if they are not on top, then they can get easily lost behind the main window and be almost impossible to find again. So, this is by design. You can always minimize the window, or use the Rollup option to shrink it to it's window caption.

Hmm...
I use up to three overlapping windows in ZMUD to connect to different MUSHes (hmm, sometimes as many as 5, but then some are totally covered). I don't feel like giving up this capability. I won't use tabbed windows, since I want to see output from all three windows so I can tell if it's something I need to pay attention to (thus rolling up/minimizing is not an option). I won't shrink them since I want to have the output wide enough for tabular displays.
Why not make these all full primary windows, like the multiple windows of a browser? ZMUD isn't perfect on this either, but at least I can use it the way I want to. |

You should still be able to use the floating windows like normal windows. They just won't go behind the main window. But they will still go behind each other. Letting the window go behind the main window would be the same as hiding it (since you still wouldn't see it), so it seems like having the floating windows always above the main window would be better for your situation since you wouldn't miss anything that way.
You can always undock all windows from the main window and then shrink the main window down till just the menu/toolbar is shown. |

Yeah, the new docking system is a ton better than the old way. It's very usable now.

I was playing with it earlier, making lots of windows and arranging them prettily (since I'm on 1440x900, I have plenty of screen realestate for things like channel capture, information alerts and stuff). It works really well, customising a window's position is very intuitive thanks to the "relative to..." option. I can see myself getting a lot of use out of them ^_^
