Comments about the Window system/layout |
I finally got around to trying cMUD out, and there are aspects about the windowing model that I either don't care for or don't know enough yet about configuring it to my liking.
1. Flyout windows
These are just annoying to me, and I'd like to disable them. For one, they fly out too easily--just passing the mouse over them (and not hovering) causes them to fly out.
Since I don't have a need for them, I'd like to disable the flyouts completely, and reclaim the window space.
2. Tabbed/multiple windows
I didn't really like the window model of zMUD, and I was hoping it would be different here.
I prefer to not use tabs, ever. I keep multiple sessions open, and need to see them all on the screen without tabbing, and certainly without them automatically coming to the front. Since I have a nice wide screen, I have plenty of space for multiple windows.
So I open two sessions, then drag one out to form it's own window. But the size of this window is very small, and I have to resize it.
Also, I've never liked the idea of there being a difference between the main windows and these undocked windows, when the undocked one is a session. I can't minimize the main window without minimizing all sessions with it. If I minimize an undocked session, I get this little window bar at the bottom of my screen. If I click on any cMUD window, all cMUD windows come to the front. I'd like to have a window model that almost all other apps use, where you can have multiple main windows (Firefox, for example) and where each can be minimized or brought to the front independently.
So I try the trick that I learned from zMUD where I undock all my windows, then every new session I open starts undocked. However, in cMUD, the new session becomes a tab in the undocked window, and then when I click on it, cMUD goes into an infinite (I think) loop. |

In CMUD just move the windows to where you want them, undock them, etc. Your layout for each session is automatically saved and restored. So if you don't like the flyout windows, then just close them. They are still accessible via the Windows menu. If you don't like the tabs, then make them floating or drag them where you want.
If you want to change the default layout for new sessions, you can press ESC to close the session selection window, then drag the windows around the way you want, then use the Layout/Save Layout option to save it to the CMUD.XLY default layout file. Just be sure to make a copy of this file so that you can restore it after upgrading since upgrading will restore the default.
Sorry if you personally don't like this docking stuff, but from the other feedback I've gotten it's the favorite feature of most other people. Just an example of not being able to please everyone. But if you run a lot of windows on your MUD like many people do, the CMUD interface is the best for keeping everything organized.
For example, in Firefox I use TabMix Plus to keep *everything* in tabs. I don't like dozens of windows in my task bar. Everyone is different. |
