MXP noob

I have read the zMUD help files on MXP and couldn't find the answer to my question.

Discworld MUD has a terminal setting for MXP.

I have MXP enabled in zMUD.

However, when I try the MXP setting on Discworld, the tags show up instead.

The slightly undulating grass of the savanna spreads out in all directions. Here and there small, hardy shrubs dot the ground.
MXP<color fore=whiteMXP>It is a very warm secundus spring's afternoon with a steady breeze and medium cloud cover.
MXP</colorMXP>MXP</bMXP>MXP</uMXP>MXP<color fore=yellowMXP>There are four obvious exits: journey north, journey east, journey south and journey west.MXP</colorMXP>MXP</bMXP>MXP</uMXP>
MXP<color fore=cyanMXP>MXP<bMXP>A vulture is standing here.MXP</colorMXP>MXP</bMXP>MXP</uMXP>

Are there some other setting in zMUD I need to have on/off to get this to work?

MXP commands I wrote myself seem to be working.

Thanks!

It looks like the MUD doesn't follow the protocol correctly. Like what does that MXP string do that is placed in random places? That isn't a part of the MXP protocol!

It's not placed in random places... it's place before every < and > that's enclosing a code. I don't know the solution to this problem, though.

You are correct. Didn't notice that but it still does not follow the protocol. Either there is some odd trigger in zMUD adding 'MXP' when it sees < or > or it is the MUD sending weird data.

parrotslave: Do you know if the MXP setting in that MUD works for someone else playing the MUD with an MXP compatible client?

Yes, a MUSHClient user said it works for him.

That's mysterious. Something you can try to look at is what the server is sending zMUD. You can do that by creating a log file using the #debug command.

For example: #debug datalog.txt

When you have finished logging you enter #debug to close it. Please note that even the password can usually be read in the log file. So it isn't gagged like when you login which means that if you want to post the log file you would have to remove any passwords that's located in it.

You got that using #debug? The forum software might remove stuff I guess. Usually there are control codes and stuff in the data stream - if it isn't locked to some mode.

In either case if this is the contents of the output file and I haven't misunderstood how #debug works(that it saves the data sent from the MUD without editing it to file) then it looks like the error is in the MUD.

It is a mystery why it works on MUSHClient though. Both clients should get parsing errors. Perhaps MUSHClient has better error recovery but it should atleast show the first 'MXP' in front of the <.

Perhaps it is some setting in the MUD that needs to be toggled, or there actually is some bug. You might want to ask the admins of the MUD if the MXP support has been tested with zMUD, and if you have the correct settings.

I just created a new character in Discworld and everything seems to work fine. It automatically recognized that I was using zMUD and enabled MXP. The links show up fine and I don't seem to get any problems with colors.

Perhaps you need to do "mxp default" in order to set everything back in order? Other than that, try moving your settings file somewhere else, so that a new, blank one is created and see if the problem continues.

were you still on 'term ansi', or did you switch to 'term mxp'

Ok, now I did and I did experience the problem. However, this was because I had MXP turned off when I did "term mxp". Discworld relies on various tags to be defined by the server when you log in. If zMUD does not have MXP enabled at log-in time, then the custom tags won't work. All I had to do after setting "term mxp" was to enable MXP in zMUD, quit and log in again. Then it worked correctly once more.

I tried just that and it is still not catching the MXP properly.
I also seem to be getting no closing tags at all:

MXP<bMXP>MXP<CyanMXP>The handsome farmer says: Aye, they say 'e gets it from cats.
MXP<bMXP>MXP<CyanMXP>The tall farmer says: Nay, he gets it from pigeons, all know that.
MXP<bMXP>MXP<CyanMXP>On the northern side of the market, the sad farmer says: Aye, they say 'e gets it from cats.

I made sure term was set to ansi before logging out.
Prefs - MXP - Enabled - check
close out zmud entirely
then i reconected, still with this issue
