Fatal error: cannot access databases in directory

Can someone tell me what is causing this besides mdac/jet? It was working fine until I had to repair my windows xp pro installation due to downloading a bad hotfix. I tested my zmud on another computer with the same mdac/jet version files(i used the MS component checker to check) and it works fine. So what could be the problem?

personally it sounds like the windows repair file downgraded some of your files and they are unable to work with them. Did you try reinstalling zmud after the repair to replace any shared file libraries?

Okay maybe it "is" mdac/jet. I upgraded to 7.21 which works except for the mapper. I get the error "no such interface supported" when i try to use the mapper. Only the mapper in 7.21 uses mdac/jet right? Can the mdac files be corrupted even if the versions match using the component checker? Or is it some other reason besides mdac/jet. Thanks.

Edit:

I upgraded from mdac 2.7 rtm to mdac 2.8 rtm.
Ran component checker and all the files match(all files are new versions except for msxml3r.dll which is same version as mdac 2.7 rtm)
reboot
zmud 7.21 mapper still cannot work
extracted msxml3r.dll from the mdac28 archive using winzip
replace in system32 directory
reboot
still does not work...

Summary:

imho I think it is highly unlikely mdac cause this problem since i replaced all the files with 2.8 version ones. so what can really be the cause? someone please help.
