zmud freezing computer |
I've downloaded zmud and installed it several times. each time I get to the character screen it makes zmud freeze up as soon as I try to do anything there. like clicking on a mud link or trying to create a new character... just about anything freezes it up. I run windows 98 SE and I've even formatted my drive and reinstalled windows and it keeps doing the same thing. is there something I need to do to fix this? Please help.

I've spent hours trying to find a fix for this but cannot. Here's additional information if anyone can help me please.
Win 98 SE v. 4.10.2222 a
Computer:
GenuineIntel
x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 6
255 MB Ram
Dell Desktop Optiplexgx110
32-bit file system
I'm also having a problem running Java applets (I know that's not your area, but maybe this will help it might be related?) I'm getting a black on black screen trying to enter my mud through a java applet, an old one and a new one. I'm running JRE's newest version of Java
I went so far as formatting my drive again, and trying to install Zmud's newest version without the updates from microsoft. no help there, I then formatted my drive AGAIN, reloaded win 98 se and got the patches from microsoft and still no help.
I tried downloading the old free version of Zmud and it works fine, but I want the new one that's supported, I plan on buying it just as soon as I can be sure it is going to work, but I can't get past the character screen without my computer freezing up. the Mouse pointer still works but that's about all. I have to CTL ALT DEL and manually shut down Zmud every time. Thanks for any help you may provide |

That's not much memory. Make sure you are not running *any* other programs when you run zMUD. You've got a very minimal system and it could easily run out of memory when running zMUD along with any other program, even a web browser or email client.
Since the latest 7.13b version of zMUD doesn't use ADO/MDAC anymore at startup, then it shouldn't be any problem with that, and if you are seeing the character database then it's already initialized the database correctly. Also, it can't be a problem with eLicense since that goes away once you get to the character database.
But trying to open a MUD connection needs enough memory and system resources to open a new window, so that might be the problem. You can also check other things from the Character window, like just opening the Options screen, or clicking the Edit or New buttons to see what happens.
Unfortunately, as I said, I've only seen this kind of problem when a Win98 system runs out of memory or resources, and there isn't much you can do about that except get more memory. I seem to recall there was an accessory application in Win98 for monitoring your system resources and memory, so maybe someone can give instructions on using that. But since zMUD 7.13b works fine on our Win98 test system here, there isn't much else I can suggest that you haven't already tried. |
