Outbox/Sentbox

What's the distinction between Private Messages in the Outbox and PM's in the Sent box? I never noticed it before, but I still have one in the Outbox from a few days ago. If this were a mail client, that would mean that it hadn't been sent yet, but I don't see anything beyond the submit button. Does it just mean that the message hasn't been received yet? (Ie, recipient pulls it from my Outbox versus in email I would be pushing it out)

Items in the outbox have NOT been read by the recipient so you can edit these after you send them, items in the sentbox have been read.
