Problems with upgrading to 7.x |
I normally use 4.x, as I didn't like the new versions on my old crappy computer.
My computer performs much better, and I'm trying it out again. Using Zsconvert, I've converted the mudchar database, and it shows up in the char manager.
A big problem is that when I load a char, all variables I set up are now blank. They didn't inherit their values.
This is really bad, and stops me from using 7.x as I'd need to reinput all my old variables.
Why isn't zmud accepting the old var values? |

Read the Migration Guide in the Support/zMUD Support section of the web site. Old versions of zMUD commonly corrupted their settings files to the point that the new version cannot read them. You can try importing your values, but I'm afraid that going from v4.x to 7.x might be too big of a step if you have complex triggers.

A quick glance at that page and it doesn't seem to be a way for it to accept the variables. Why does it accept all other settings, but not variables?
This a really killer bug for me. |

The Settings/Import/Settings option *does* import your variables. There isn't any bug here. If it can't import your settings as described, then your file is corrupted and will need to be recreated or restored from an older backup from before it was corrupted. Although the *.MUD settings file is binary, you can often still load it into Notepad and recover a lot of stuff.
But don't do a "quick glance". You need to actually follow the instructions as listed in the Migration Guide exactly.
And as I said, 4.62 is such an old version (it's over 5 years old for goodness sakes), that I can't ensure that it will work. 4.62 was filled with lots of bugs. Hundreds of issues have been fixed since then. So it's very possible that your old file is corrupted beyond repair. |

I didn't use import, i made a copy of all my .mud files and put them into the new zmud folder. It kept the triggers and aliases, but all the variables have gone.
The problem seems that zmud seems to have "use default" activated by default, and I didn't have anything in the defaults in 4.x. So now it is using "use default" to a blank value :/ |

If you didn't use Import, then you didn't follow the instructions in the Migration Guide. Go to the Migration Guide and follow the instructions. That's all I can do to help with an old version. In case you couldn't find it for some reason, the Migration Guide is HERE Go down to the section called "Corrupt Settings Files" and follow the instructions.
If those instructions still don't give you your settings, then you are on your own. I do not support versions of zMUD that are as old as 4.62. |
