For some reason when I try and start zmud I get a fatal error: cannot open database in directory: C\:\zMUD I'm no wiz with pc's programmes or whatevers, so please direct me to a happy comclusion

Your problem is a corrupted character database. Delete it, rename it, whatever. Start ZMud again, and the stock char.mdb file will be recreated. After that, you can either recreate your characters and make all the necessary attachments or simply rename the old file back to the original.

how and where do I find the character database? I'm below novice where things like this is concerned Embarassed

Standard install would have put it here ---> C:\zMUD

Go to Start > My Computer > Local disk (C:) > Zmud folder

After I deleted the 'chardb' from the zMUD folder and tried to restart zMUD I got another warning... 'in table-level validation expression'

you probably deleted the wrong file, then. The filename you need to delete is char.mdb. There are other .mdb, .dbt, etc files that are associated with the Database Module in that folder as well, and as far as I know those aren't regenerated when deleted.

I deleted the char.dbt and I still got the same fatal error message. I tried to delete the zMUD
so I could reinstall, but it tells me ... 16 bit Windows Subsystem... C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows application. And refuses to be deleted!

char.dbt is the wrong file to delete... restore it from the recycle bin, delete instead char.MDB

There are no .MDB files at all in the zMUD folder I have char.dbt or chardb

zMud versions 7.05a. I contacted ZUGG and their reply was.....
Something is messed up with your Microsoft MDAC/JET drivers on your
computer. Go to the page http://www.zuggsoft.com/data and update the
MDAC, and Jet drivers on your system. If you have Win XP SP2 then you
probably already have the updated MDAC software, but you probably don't
have the Jet drivers.

I downloaded the files sugested but both files tell me that I already have the up to date components on my PC and don't need to run them.
I tried to uninstall zMUD so I could redownload it but ....

Attempting to uninstall zMUD via either the start, programme, zMUD,
uninstall or control panel add/remove programmes come up with a message
which states.... C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose
'Close' to terminate the application. Pressing on close or ignore have
the same result, the zMUD programme remains installed.

My PC runs with Windows XP and service pack 2

so I'm completely flumaxed and I'm way, way over my head about this problem

C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT means that the AUTOEXEC.NT file in the system32 directory got deleted or currupted. follow the instructions here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324767

Time for me to respond to this one I guess.

First, the error in the Uninstaller about the AUTOEXEC.NT program is because the current Uninstaller for zMUD is broken. To uninstall zMUD, just delete all of the files in your zMUD directory and then reinstall. Or, just install zMUD into a new directory on your computer and see if it works there.

Also, when instructing people to delete files, it's a good idea to be more specific about exactly what filename to delete. A lot of people are novices and if you delete the wrong file (like this person apparently did), then it can lead to all sorts of problems.

So again, my recommendation is that you first install zMUD to a DIFFERENT directory on your computer and see if it works from there before getting too carried away with various system file problems.
