This has come up many tiimes. Zugg programs in Delphi which is for windows only. If you want to have zmud run on unix you are out of luck.

Zmud 7.05 Runs fairly decently under Wine, without a pre-existing Windows Partition

Yes, zMUD has worked wonderfully under wine since mid 6.x versions at least. I know that I've got a screenshot lying around...

I can't get Jet or MDAC installed on a fake windows drive since they need IE and I've had trouble with the IE installer. anybody know how to get around this? I'm using debian unstable version. (I used to have it working too, don't know what I did before... sigh)

Well there is a program to port Delphi code specificly to linux (I think). Its called Kylix, and was created by Borland, or whoever they call themselves now. However, I have never used it, and I can imagine that for some of the trickier code, you would have to recode it for the differences in O/S's.

I think the issue is a bit larger. First of all I think I read a thread that Kylix didn't work as well as Zugg expected. If I remember it correct it wasn't very portable with "real" delphi code.
The other issue is that zMUD uses 3rd-party components. Those might not be avaible for Unix systems or simply not work as intended. One of those components is the e-license system. There is no easy way to protect an Unix-application the way it is done in Windows using eLicense. While this component could easily be replaced it is one of those things that decide if porting is profitable.
If you want a version of zMUD that runs on Unix-systems I think you would have to investigate what kind of copy protections are avaible. Also it would have to be profitable. There's a need of a pretty large user base.
Actually I believe the entire issue is a question of profit. |

One very simple way of getting a working wine installation is with winetools.
I temporarily downgraded to 20041019 as suggested in the winetools docs, and then I went through the entire gambit of winetools setups. Then I went to the latest wine and ended up with zmud working fine. This had the added bonus of giving me a much more stable ie6 when finished. Although personally, the native linux firefox is way better. |
