I'm probably stupid, but I can't seem to log into gemstone iv.

On attempt I get a 'L problem 3' error with a box that comes up and says something to the effect that it cannot locate the DNS and wants to know if I'd like to try an IP instead. Well, watching it connect, I tried the ip for that and still nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Oh it does get the initial connection and allows me to pick which character I would like to play, so it is at least connecting at some point to look up my information.

Please help

Here is the exact information given by the error box:

Cannot lookup IP address for host name:

L Problem 3

There is no entry in your Domain Name Service (DNS) server for that host.

Either the host name for the MUD has changed or you have mistyped the name
(I never typed anything)

after that it says if I screwed up the name type it in the box and try again
or if I know the IP put that in again and try that

There is an IP in the box, but it doesn't work.

It appears to me that "L Problem 3" is the host name that is being looked up. I'm not a Simutronics customer, so I can't say for sure, but you probably have a problem with your account and need to contact someone at Simutronics about it.
