zMUD stops at the start

Hi.

Yesterday zMUD was running perfectly well and when I wanted to start it this morning, I saw a message box saying 'Class not registered'. The program freezed at the start screen (The status on the splash screen said: 'Loading zMUD Modules... 0' / 'Name: MainModule' / 'Status: Initializing') and I had to kill it via task manager. I tried to de- and reinstall and even got the latest version (7.03), did not help. I can not run my 'old' 6.62 nor the new 7.03, it stop with this message.

Can anyone help...?

Mar©W

PS: Needless to say that my 6.62 was a registered version. But I could not register the new 7.03, because it stops running before I have the chance to.

I believe this is a problem with your MDAC installation. Follow the instructions at http://www.zuggsoft.com/data to test and repair this problem.

Hello.

It seems that this was not the problem. I got the latest MDAC from MS (Version 2.8) and did an Windows Update for Jet 4.0 OLEDB. The problem still exists.

I forgot to mention my configuration in my first posting. I use WinXP Pro SP1.

Hello.

I have some more information that I just discovered. When I did not rename my chars.mdb in the 6.62 zMUD, I get another error message (when I rename it so zMUD can not find it, I get the 'Class not registered' message though). The message says: 'Fatal error: Can not open databases in directory D:zMUD' and then when I press the Ok-button I get a message-box titled 'COM Server Warning' with the message: 'There are still active COM objects in this application. One or more clients may have references to these objects, so manually closing this application may cause those client application(s) to fail. Are you sure you want to close this application?' If I press 'Yes', zMUD closes. If I press no I get another message-box: 'Chars: Cannot perform this operation on a closed dataset.'

I can open the chars.mdb and any other of these Access-db normally (using Access XP). I get no warning or error then.

Perhaps (*crossing fingers*) this helps to locate and even solve the problem.

Thanx.

Hello,

Try to install zMUD into a new, clean, directory and run it from there. Also do you have zMapper installed?

zMUD most likely uses COM to talk with the database so you might still want to read the instructions at http://www.zuggsoft.com/data where there's also a tool to run to detect problems in a MDAC installation.

More things to consider are if you are running as admin, or less priviligied user. This can indeed cause troubles at times.

Hello,

I did both already, installed into a new, fresh directory, I even installed onto a different (physically different) hard disk. And I did run the tool, it says all is fine, no mismatches. It did not help at all. I even did a checkdisk and defrag. Nothing, zMUD does not start.

I have full admin rights.

What else can I do except a complete new installation of Windows? (which I rather would like to avoid sine I did that not too long ago - after that zMUD was running, the error showed up first two days ago - and I guess my boss will ask me some uncomfortable questions if I install again just for zMUD...)

Ok I think you should contact Zuggsoft's support at support@zuggsoft.com
I have searched this forum and it seems as if no issue with that error message has been solved. Please write a note back in this thread if you solve it as other people probably also have this issue.

Hello again.

I have more information on this matter. I got an older 6.16 version from zMUD, installed it and it runs perfectly well. But still, neither the 6.62 and the 7.03 are running.

Perhaps that rings a bell...?

I'm also getting this error (Class not Registered). I just today installed 7.03. I've also followed the options posted above and none helped neither.

Please email support@zuggsoft.com about this issue. Then if you get a solution to the issue please post it to this forum so that others with this problem can solve it.

It is likely that the issue still is MDAC related as 6.16 doesn't use the database.

The cause of this problem IS STILL your MDAC/JET installation. That is the only thing that can cause the "Class Not Registered" problem and the error about not being able to create a database in your zMUD directory.

The EXACT ORDER of steps used to install MDAC/JET is VERY important. This Microsoft software is VERY finicky, especially on Windows XP. On Windows XP, Windows tries to be too smart and will not actually install MDAC if it thinks it is already installed. In some cases it doesn't even display an error message, so you THINK it has installed when in fact it has done nothing.

Installing the MDAC 2.8 files from the Microsoft site can sometimes help since Windows will see that this is a new version and will actually install it. But if your system thinks that it already has 2.8 installed, then installing 2.8 again won't do anything and won't fix any problems.

Reinstalling Windows XP and then reinstalling the MDAC/JET files correctly seems to fix the problem. As of now, I have not determined any easy way in Windows XP to just force it to reinstall MDAC/JET or to force it to reinstall the Windows SP1 that has the bad MDAC 2.7 software as part of it.

This is a MICROSOFT problem, not a zMUD problem. If you email me I won't be able to help and I'll just repeat the same information that I've stated here. Perhaps some day Microsoft will fix their bugs in the MDAC installation. It seems that EVERY version of MDAC has had it's own problems. But it's the only way to do SQL Database access without licensing and distributing a full database engine with zMUD.

Most people don't have trouble with this because using the normal Windows Updater to install system updates, or following the step by step instructions on the http://www.zuggsoft.com/data page works fine for them. But if you've got a system where some other software package has installed an older MDAC/JET file on top of a newer one, or otherwise have a corrupted MDAC installation, Microsoft has not provided any easy way to fix this.

As mentioned above, the "MDAC Checker" program on the http://www.zuggsoft.com/data page and on the Microsoft page can be used to look for problems with your MDAC installation.

zMUD started using MDAC in version 6.30. So, any version after that is going to require the MDAC software on your computer.
