delay in zmud 7.01 |
zmud does not run properly on a standard XP install. i have only tested on XP Home Edition. the delay is an overall reduced scrolling speed and a 250 millisecond or so delay whenever a command is entered.
this performance degradation has led me to run windows 98 for much longer than i would like because it is impossible to cope with that lag. i have tested on a p4 2 ghz, an xp 2400, and an amd 1 ghz, all functioned exactly the same. all operating systems had current motherboard drivers and service packs and patches. video and sound drivers were double-checked.
you mentioned before something about upgrading network drivers, if you would be kind enough to share a link to your recommended drivers that would be nice.
edit: also worth mentioning that triggers were disabled |

As far as I know, there are no recommended drivers. The only recommended course of action is to try and find newer drivers than what you might have.
Also, perhaps you could try with themes support disabled in windows and see if that helps. Other than that, I don't know what to suggest. |

There is definitely something wrong with your system. I just upgraded to WinXP in December and this is only a 500 Mhz computer and I don't see any delays at all like this. I assume you tried a fresh install of zMUD to a completely new directory in case your preferences or settings are messed up?
On the network cards, the drivers are dependant on the network card you use so I can't make any recommendation. On my wife's system I couldn't get any new driver to fix the network crashes, so I just bought a new cheap card at OfficeMax. But in that case I was getting the actual crashes from sending data too fast through the card. It doesn't sound like you are getting crashes.
How much memory do you have on your system? Memory seems to be the biggest factor in WinXP speed. You should have at least 256 MB and 512 MB is even better. With only 128 MB all of my WinXP systems were dogs.
You really don't want to keep running Win98...the resource limits on Win98 will cause all sorts of problems running multiple apps at the same time. |

you're right about one thing, i really don't want to be running win98 ;)
the 1 ghz machine has 256 ram, and the other two both had 512. i had delay both on DSL 768k, and dialup. like i said i tested on three different machines with exactly same results. all were fresh installs. i'm actually starting to think it's something wrong with XP, wouldn't surprise me if it's one of the security updates doing it. |
