zmud stopped working on XP |
I upgraded to Windows XP Pro edition in June and have been using zmud on the system since then. Yesterday zmud just quit loading. I can click on the various icons and files in a variety of locations, but zmud will not start.
I've subsequently tried a variety of steps such as reinstalling, rolling back, clean installing in a new directory, etc. Nothing seems to work. The LicCtrl service is automatically loaded upon restarting my system and I double checked to make sure that is has been running (I've restarted it a couple of times to see if anything would shake loose. ;p).
I'm now at a total loss as to what to try next. Any suggestions?
Oh, I was using version 6.66, but in my clean install I dropped back to 6.62. |

Okay. I finally tracked down the problem. For those people using XP whose Zmud quits working and it is not a LicCtrl problem, try clearing out the contents of your C:Documents and Settings<User>Local SettingsTemp folder. Somehow I managed to have 32,000 files accumulate in this folder and it prevented several programs from working (i.e. Adobe Acrobat, several installation programs, and Zmud). Once I cleaned most of the files out Zmud started working again.
I hope this helps some people. |

I am having the same problem, with the same message. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, unlicensed and relicensed 6.62 and 6.67 with no help. Same message as previous poster.

A little more info, please. When it won't start, does it show zMUD's loading screen at all (where it lists that it's loading sound settings, characters, etc), or does it not even get that far? If it doesn't get that far, it's an eLicense kind of issue, it might be a good idea to contact them for help, too.

Yes, the loading screen starts
Loading zMUD Modules... 0
Name: Main Module
Status: Initialising
Then the error dialogue appears... clicking OK on that closes it, but leaves zMUD open but just sitting there. Taskman doesn't show it as non-responsive. |

I am also having this problem. I upgraded to windows XP and then a month later zmud will not run properly. I also, reinstalled XP, reinstalled zmud, downloaded other versions of zmud. They all do the same thing. I can get clear into my chars then it shuts down the whole program after about 30 secs of it running. Please help, I am not really intrested in using another mud client.

Sounds like corrupt settings, though since they're not for a specific character window loading, I'm not sure what to suggest. Have you emailed zugg@zuggsoft.com?

Not sure if this'll help anyone else, but my zMUD has literally just started working after I installed a heap of windows updates - I have no idea which one update may have worked, but it seems to suggest the fault lies in the OS, not in zMUD itself. Anyway, hie yourselves over to microsoft's update site and get patching, it may solve it for you.

YES! Especially on WinXP, it's crucial that you use the Windows Updater to keep your WinXP system up to date with all patches. My best guess is that there was a problem with your MDAC system software that was fixed by one of the updates. But WinXP has all sorts of little bugs and quirks, most of which are solved via patches. When I updated from Win2000 to WinXP over the holidays, my system was a *lot* more reliable after installing all of the critical updates from the Windows Updater.
