question on special chars and pattern matching

I'm a little confused about the special chars and pattern matching. I think I may have figured it out, it just doesn't work like I expect.

First, let me say that Armageddon uses ~ as its own special char used in emotes. I'm changing zMUD to use instead of ~ in the Special Characters config.

Now, I figured this meant it would apply to the pattern matching, too, but it appears those are two different things. I'm looking for confirmation or contradiction.

The help says:
"~ quote the next character to prevent it to be interpreted as a wild card, required to match special characters"

If I change the Special Character "~" to "", should I change my pattern from:
~[*~]
to
[*]
?

Thanks.

Okay, NOW it's using the in the patterns to mean escape. This is strange, because I changed the special char, restarted zMUD and tested the pattern and it still wanted ~ to mean escape. Is it because I was offline? That's the one thing I did between when it wanted ~ and when it wanted ...
