After I updated Windows...

After I updated windows I can't seem to get zmud 6.62 to work. I uninstalled it then reinstalled and I get this error...

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. The following is copied from the details:

Veldrane, stop spreading misinformation. There are over 10,000 people using zMUD 6.62 on Windows 98 and they aren't complaining. If you can't post a constructive message to help someone else, then don't post. You are on the verge of getting banned here. We know about the problem you are having so leave it to your own thread.

Calia, on your specific problem, where in zMUD do you get this error? Do you get the initial splash screen that says "Initializing..."? If so, what module is being loaded when it gives the error. Or, if you get past that, at what point does it give the error?

Finally, if you just applied an update to Windows or reinstalled Windows, you might need to go to the page http://www.zuggsoft.com/data and reapply the MDAC and Jet patches there. But that doesn't usually cause an invalid page fault, so answer the first question before we decide to try that.

Calia, also, you could see if perhaps some running program(s) are causing some sort of conflict. Try exiting all running programs (including the ones in the System Tray) one at a time, and then running zmud.. when zmud starts correctly, then you've likely found the culprit.. if this solves the problem, tell us what program it is, so we can avoid it, or figure out why it's conflicting. (some anti-virus programs can conceivably cause this kind of error) also, run a Thorough scandisk of your hard drive, just to be sure there's no problems in the file system, or drive itself, as this can also cause similar problems

Greetings Zugg and zex0s,

I get the error even before the splash screen.

I have removed as many tasks as I can, right down to only Explorer, Systray and Rnaapp; and the program still comes up with the same error. I also ran a scandisk which reported no problems.

Thanks for your help :)

It sounds like it could be an elicense error. The elicense is wrapped around zmud.exe so that would be why it says zmud.exe crashed and not some elicense.dll. Is elicense installed on your system?

Check if zMUD is listed in controlpanel->eLicense Control->Zugg Software.

Have you tried to reinstall zMUD? That should also install eLicense and set up correct paths in the registry if zMUD uses those.

Might also be worth to scan for computer viruses as those could cause the decryption of zmud.exe to fail.

Hi Rorso,

Yes, the elicense Control->Zugg Software is listed in the Control Panel and one of the first things that I did was uninstall 6.62 then reinstall it. I will try to scan for computer viruses now. Thank you for your suggestion.

Ok...that was tres ugly. When I did a virus scan computer crashed and burned. Had to reinstall Windows 98 4 times and I will never go near Windows Update again. I had zmud version 6.16, loaded it and it is running. I think I will wait a few days before trying to install version 6.62...do I have to download it? I'm on dialup and it will probably take forever or should I wait for the next update and install that?

Unless there is a major crippling bug found in 6.62 (not likely as it has been out for over three months), there won't be another public release version for quite some time. After Zugg finishes the server scripts for publishing a map database, I believe he intends to work on zExplorer, then zMapper, then zMUD. So as you can see, it is very probable that the next beta version of zMUD won't be seen until sometime next year.

If you are satisfied with 6.16 and can wait until the next public release (a long, long ways off), then you can stick with 6.16. Just remember that Zugg himself no longer supports 6.16 (only the latest public/beta releases are officially supported) and you will not be able to take advantage of the new mapper database.

Personally, I would ensure that Windows is up-to-date. Install the MDAC and Jet updates, then install zMUD 6.62. With a fresh Windows installation, everything should go smoothly.

Also, if you do decide to stick it out with zMUD 6.16, and in the future you ask for assistance on the Zugg Software forums, please specify which version of zMUD you are using so there won't be any confusion.
