Problem with v7.11 on Windows 98 [was: Zmud Not Starting]

I checked the other topics concerning this problem and didn't find anything that seemed to help so I decided to start a new topic.

Ok, the problem. I recently upgraded from zMud 7.05a to zMud 7.11.0.1. After I installed the upgrade I tried to run it, a message box popped up saying:

The C:\ZMUD\ZMUD.EXI file
can't load at the desired address, and is not relocatable.
Contact your vendor to get a version that is compatible with this version of Windows.

A second window also pops up saying:

Windows cannot run this program because it is in an invalid format.

Everything worked fine before I installed the upgrade, I'm currently running windows 98.

Edit: Version 7.05a not 7.04a

Sigh...I just confirmed this with VMware. Seems the new EXE isn't compatible with Win98 for some reason. Not sure why yet since zApp works fine on Win98 and uses the same installer and compression program. But I'll look into it and see if I can download a new version later today.

How do we roll the installation back so we can use ZMud until the error is corrected? Do we have to delete and reinstall?

You cannot load an older version into the same directory as a newer version. That is why you are *always* supposed to make a backup of your files before upgrading any software, not just zMUD.

Unless you have a backup you should just wait till I have this problem fixed. I'm working on it as we speak.

I have temporarily uploaded a version of zMUD 7.11a that is not compressed. This seems to fix the problem with Windows 98. I will continue to play with various options of the compressor program. It seems to be a wierd interaction between the old Delphi 5 compiler that is used for zMUD, the compression program, and eLicense. Since zApp uses Delphi 7, it doesn't seem to have this relocation problem. I have no idea what Delphi 5 is doing differently, and there is no way for me to use Delphi 7 for zMUD right now. So I'm just going to have to play with all of the options of this compression program to see if I can find a set that works for all versions of Windows.

I must say that it's getting to be more and more of a pain to support older versions of Windows.

I found a different compression program that seems to work better with Delphi 5, eLicense, and old versions of Windows, while still giving a decent compression ratio.

So, I have uploaded yet another version of zMUD 7.11a that is compressed once again. So if you want the smaller file, you can download it again.

Let me know if you have any trouble, but it seems to work on my Win98 test system here.

Sorry again for the trouble...since all of this worked fine with zApp, I never expected a problem with zMUD.

Hi

I have the same problem, I haven't installed your new software yet, but wanted to let you know that though my problem is the same, I'm running Windows ME, not 98. Besides from that it's the same. Hope you can use it in some way.

Umm, you don't need to post if you haven't used the new version yet. Upgrade to the new version and *then* tell me if you still have a problem.
