This is childish of me, but it's Christmas, so I'm allowing myself a little fun.

I've demonstrated your mental shortcomings repeatedly. Demonstrate mine. You claim to recognize them.

By the way, you could easily think I didn't actually see any of what I claimed about where you're located, so I'll offer a little proof. You're using AT&T Broadband (attbi.com) in the 12.245.x.x IP range. I could narrow it down to state and locality too, but it's no fun to just give it all away on the first try.

I've always thought zMud and the whole eLicense thing were stupid. And for heaven's sake, apparently if you've got people cracking the program because they can't register with eLicense properly, there's something really wrong. You might want to take a step back and re-evaluate something, especially if people who actually paid for the program are getting shafted in such a manner.

As an official response to this thread, the email that demoneyoungblood received was from Chris Doherty, one of head people at eLicense. His email is absolutely proper and correct: you have BROKEN THE LAW and are subject to the consequences. Here is a quote from the zMUD License agreement that you agreed to the first time you used zMUD:

quote:

Attempts to modify the zMUD software, use an invalid registration code, or attempts to circumvent the copy protection can cause zMUD to stop functioning. In addition, such illegal activities may prevent the user from using zMUD or any future Zugg Software products in the future.

So yes, we are well within our rights to disable your registration code, even if you are a paying customer.

In terms of the procedure, eLicense has sent me a copy of the email and asked me if I want to disable your registration code. I haven't answered them yet because I'm supposed to be on vacation. There might be other emails regarding other users in my mailbox also. However, in the cases that you quote, other users have bought licenses for people who admitted to hacking, and that is quite a different case in my mind.

People need to understand that software piracy and cracking is A CRIME! Not just in the US, but in *many* different countries. Just because your friends do it doesn't make it right. For HONEST people, the first action that comes to mind when a license stops working is to email zuggsoft or elicense to try to get it resolved. HONEST people do not immediately try to use a crack to use the software for free.

This kind of situation actually happens fairly often. I get about one email per week from some MUD admin who is reading a chat log where someone was giving out their registation code or trying to crack zMUD. When a registration code is given out, that code is immediately disabled, regardless of who purchased it.

I glad to see that eLicense takes the law seriously and is going after people who they think have blantantly violated the law. If I can determine the reg code, then yes, I will disable it. However, I don't do anything fancy or illegal to determine the owner of the license. If the license isn't under your name or email address, then there is probably nothing I can do about it.

Of course, I could still ban you from using this forum, but you'd probably just come back with a different username. Besides, people obviously find your posts amusing.

This whole thread brings to mind similar situations I've encountered recently.

First, my friend's father asked my friend if he wasn't upset that his brother was living at home and not paying rent. My friend responded, "Hell yes I'm upset! I'm upset I believed you when you said we had to pay rent!"

The second is my situation at work. I work for the US Postal Service. One of the perks of being a supervisor(babysitter) is to have a parking spot close to the entrance, and not have to walk the half-mile from the employee parking lot. Everyone at the distribution center where I work has been told that they will be towed if they park illegally - innumerous times. Everyday I go to work, I pass many illegally parked cars, thinking, 'boy I wish I had the kahunas to park up here, but I know as soon as I do, they WILL tow.' Of the few times cars have been towed, the employees have whined, moaned, and filed grievances with the unions. Sort of what I see going on here.

My problem with this whole thread and the environment I occupy is that there are too few teeth. I feel that some people will always do the wrong thing, some will always do the right thing, and some need to have their boundaries created with enough frightening circumstances to keep them honest and inside the bounds of the law.

In too many instances I find policies are not enforced or not enforced often enough so that I feel cheated when I do what is right. Should I feel this way?

I hope elicense doesn't back away from hindering/prosecuting crackers. I hope Zugg supports elicense's efforts to thwart this behavior, and I hope every honest zMUDDER has a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Obviously the entire point has gone over your heads. Congratulations for being idiots, I guess. Oh, and Merry Christmas (even if you are dumb as a post).

Thank you, come again.

Note: I know this wasn't directed at me (at least I hope so, because there is no reason), but the whole attitude just deserves the response. Like I say, it's not the fact that people complain, it's how they do it...
