Sharing a connection

I know this is not really a zmud question but I have received help well from you knowledgeable lot before so I thought I would ask here (Yes I am a registered holder of Zmud and love it to death) :)

If you share a similar connection with someone (for me I share a cable modem with one other person). Is there anyway you can play a mud with them?
Can you learn together?
Can you get equipment together?
Can you be in the same cabal together?

I know there are many others out there in a similar situation that share the same connection as well.

I ask this because I enjoy playing my character with my friends character. It makes mudding more fun. When we play we look like we have the same IP Address from the implementors point of view.

From his point of view we have the same IP Address and would look supicious i.e. looks like I am using 2 characters at once even though I am not. We share a cable modem over a network using some NAT software.

Now I want is to be able to interact with my friends current character and others in the future. I am sure there are others that have a similar problem. Is is best to get separate ip addresses so that we can play together?

So what can we do get separate accounts on the same ISP? We dont really want to pay for two accounts, would that still be similar Ip addresses?

If I get a second ip address and connect both pcs into my hub and connect my cable modem to the uplink port of the hub would you see the ip of the cable modem or the separate ips of the two networked computers?

i.e. like this [cable modem]-----[Hub]---[pc 1]
--[pc 2]

Or can we set up Zmud somehow to have different Ip Adresses i.e. connect through a proxy server or something?

Give your thoughts.

cheers

Sorry, zMUD can't overcome the limitation that all the traffic from your location is interfaced through a single cable modem. Your options are:
1. Get your ISP to assign a 2nd IP to the cablemodem and configure your NAT so the 2nd IP points at your friend's computer and reports the different IP to outside hosts
2. Get a second cable modem.
3. Get a different mud where multi-playing (because that's what it'll always look like unless 1. or 2. above work) isn't frowned on.

Sorry I don't have a solution.

You could get a shell account from somewhere. Then telnet to the shell acct first, then to the MUD from there. Then you would appear to have the IP of the shell acct.

If you don't have access to one for free, last I checked they weren't that spendy. But check with your IP. They might offer a box you can use, and it should show up as a different IP.

Yes, this question has been brought up many different times in the forum. Try searching a bit for some old posts where I have seen detailed step-by-step instructions.

First off most cable modem service providers allow multiple ip's to be assigned through a single cable modem.
The configuration of cable modem to hub uplink port and then each computer using a port on the hub is the correct way to do that.
I am not sure what you mean about NAT software, as there is no software beyond the OS and NIC drivers required to establish that type of connection.

First test you should preform is on each machine open a dos window and type in "ipconfig". That should display the IP number for each computer. If one computer lists the other computer as the default gateway then you are running a connection sharing program that will interfere with your mud experience.

Buy a linksys BEFSR41 Etherfast Cable/DSL router, 95 bucks, this will solve all your probs. I have one and I mud on all 3 computers at the same time off of my MSN DSL connection and the msn uses Static IP.. It can be done.

That will give your computers distinct IPs on the LAN side of the router. On the WAN side (the one the MUD server sees) there will be 1 IP address.

individual muds have their own rules on 2 characters from the one internet connection helping eachother (commonly known as multi assisting, or variants of it). some let you, some dont.
the muds that dont allow will let the rule slide if you demonstrate you're two people. the imms on mud i'm on know that my brother and i are different, wont explain how we proved it :)
talk to the imps/imms and discuss the issue, good muds have imms who will consider your situation

Why oh WHY did I have pass door on...

rob...
the only way to do what you want would be to sign up for another account on bigpond..DONT DO IT!!!

find a mud that will let you have 2 players helping eachother from the same account, its easier and cheaper than using a telstra solution :P

i too use bigpond cable...sigh
