I can't wait to try the new mapper. Sounds like this is going to be lots of fun to play with

looking forward to it. I may start out with a new map to test it out and then see how it handles my large map.

Actually, I'd encourage you to just start with your existing large map. When you run the new version, it will automatically convert your existing map into the new database format and start using it. Since the new map is written to a completely different database file, your old map will be left completely untouched. So testing the new mapper will be completely safe and won't mess with your current map file.
For beta-testing purposes, it will be the people who have existing large maps that will really be able to test the new mapper to see how it works, and to see how fast it is compared to the old mapper. |

With all the messages going on with the new mapper. I don't remember if you had said if you rewrote the way the mapper finds the room information. Has this been done?

No, that is part of the Phase 2 of the mapper rewrite. The Phase 1 only concerns the new database architecture and does not make any changes to the map configuration settings or how it detects rooms on the MUD. |

Bah... I've got a bunch of stupid bank errands to do today along with a Chamber of Commerce meeting tonight. So I'm not going to get much done on the mapper testing today. It might be Monday before I can do the release. But I definitely want to release this BEFORE the Thanksgiving weekend so that people have more time to play with it.
(That's the downside to having your own business...some days you end up having to do "business" stuff instead of the fun stuff like programming. Oh well.) |

Hey, put it this way. None of us have your phone number to start hounding you about your project going fast enough :D. But I think the longer we wait, the better it feels anyway once it finally arrives. Keep up the good work!

I've got his phone number. *inno* At least, the business phone number. I won't give it out, but it's not that hard to find! So yeah, stop giving people ideas! Now... I have to go make a phon... er... go back to scripting!

Nooooo... that means I'll have to wait a whole week. I'll be on a one week cruise come Sunday. I was hoping have the new mapper to play with while on ship. But if the choice is 'Get it Now' or 'Get it Right' I always choose the latter.

There's still a chance for late Friday night, but I'm not promising it. So just check the site tomorrow night and see. I'll try to update this thread in any case tomorrow night so that you'll know before you leave this weekend. It really depends upon how well everything cooperates tomorrow.
After all, this is the *first* Beta so I am expecting problems. If I waited until all of the problems were fixed, we'd be waiting a long long time. I'll try my best. |

No worries on the schedule. I'll be throwing an 11,000-room map at it whenever it's ready, so we'll see how it does.

Heh, you guys are too fast for me. Yeah, see the new announcement on the new version. Remember to create a NEW TOPIC to report any problems to discuss the new mapper features/speed.
Edited: And I'm trying not to think about Tech playing with CMUD on his *cruise*. Hey guy, make sure you find time relax too! Hope you are going somewhere fun...I love cruises but haven't been anywhere in over 8 years, so I'm jealous :) |

Zugg you *ROCK* harder than Pink Floyd. It's my first cruise and we should be doing Bahamas, Belize, Roatan and Mexico. I hear the net rates there are outrageous so most of what I do will be offline but so much fun. And no I won't stay cooped up in the cabin despite all the mapper goodness.

Oh well, looks like the new mapper is going about as badly as I was worried. Not that this is any different from any other first beta release. Obviously I was not doing any testing with blank maps...all of my testing was with existing maps. So I completely missed that part of it. I think the fix for new, blank maps will be relatively easy, but I won't be able to do it until Monday.
You can keep reporting bugs that you find in existing maps. But I haven't found any way to get a location object created correctly in a new blank map file, so please don't bother using blank maps anymore or reporting those kind of crashes.
If you have a map file that doesn't load/convert into the new mapper, please email it to me so I can test it here. |
