Any other way to name a variable using the value of another variable?

I am having trouble defining a variable name called from another variable value.

Per the help documentation, I should be able to do
#VA simple abc
#VA @simple def

To make a variable named "a ...

I created copies of my mud session, went into one of them, and cleared most of the triggers/settings.

When I opened up the original, copied session - the settings were gone there too!
